The Best Time for Golden Hour Photos
Updated June 20, 2026
Morning or evening?
Both golden hours give beautiful light, but they differ practically. Mornings are quieter, with fewer people and often calmer air and mist; evenings are warmer and easier to plan around. Use the morning window for clean landscapes and the evening for dramatic skies.
Season and direction
The sun’s rise and set points move along the horizon through the year — further north in summer, further south in winter. That changes which compositions catch the light. Check the sunrise and sunset bearings for your date so you know exactly where the warm light will fall.
A thin layer of cloud can extend and enrich golden-hour colour, while a clear horizon gives the cleanest sunburst. A little weather is often better than none.
Plan with the tool
Enter your city (or use your location) and step through upcoming dates to see how the golden- and blue-hour windows shift. Save your favourite spots, and arrive 15–20 minutes early so you’re set up when the light is at its best.
